System restart ancillary services

“I’ve been able to carve out a unique position for myself here.”

By Christiaan Zuur, Director

At the AEMC, we work across a broad range of subjects, so I get to apply and enhance my skills and experience in different ways, to master engineering concepts, and use my writing skills to communicate these concepts in ways people can understand.

In 2015/16, I worked on a project called System Restart Ancillary Services. That was all about how you restart the electricity system if you get a catastrophic blackout. As events in South Australia in September 2016 have shown, it is important to be prepared for such major supply disruptions. The project involved much engagement with industry and government stakeholders. It became about setting up good governance frameworks, and distributing and confirming responsibilities and accountabilities amongst the parties.

I’ve been able to carve out a unique position for myself here, and having a sense of ownership over the outcomes of your work is very fulfilling. If you have the intellectual curiosity, and the ability to drive your own development, this is a great place to work.
